Class Description

Beginner Class

The beginner class is designed to teach beginner students the basic yoga poses (asanas). The poses are performed slowly and with emphasis on safety, alignment and breath. This is a fundamental level from which the foundation of the practice is built. Individual abilities may be accommodated with Yoga props. The Sanskrit names of the poses (asanas) are introduced in this class.

Intermediate Class

Students in this class have taken a beginner class and are familiar with the basic poses. This class moves at a faster pace and introduces more complexities to the basic poses. More challenging poses are practiced and the inverted poses such as headstand and shoulder stand may be introduced. Various breathing techniques may be taught and incorporated into the poses. Yoga props are used to accommodate individual needs, and safely practicing the more advanced poses is emphasized. The Sanskrit names identify the poses, and there may be an emphasis on the philosophical aspect of the practice.

Beginner and Intermediate classes are 90 minutes long and generally follow a format of the following:

  1. Centering (Cross legged seated position with awareness of breath)
  2. Asanas (Poses)
  3. Savasana  (Relaxation Pose)
